What is Beaujolais Day?

Every year on the third Thursday in November, wine lovers around the world raise a glass to the arrival of the season’s first bottles of Beaujolais Nouveau — a fresh, fruity red wine from the Beaujolais region of Burgundy, France.

The tradition began in France, where the release of the wine is marked with fireworks, music, and street festivities. By the 1970s, the excitement had spread further afield, with two wine writers creating the now-famous Beaujolais Run—a race to deliver the very first bottles from France to London.

Today, celebrations happen across the UK, but nowhere takes it quite as seriously as Swansea, in South Wales. It’s a highlight of the year, with restaurants and bars buzzing from morning till night.
